Decisions in our communities affect our daily lives: transportation, housing, healthcare, accessibility, and opportunities to live independently are shaped, in part, by public policy. Aging individuals and people with disabilities bring experiences and perspectives that belong in those decisions.
Voting is one way to make those perspectives heard.
We live in a society where people hold different beliefs, priorities, and hopes for the future. Democracy gives us a way to participate in shaping that future. Through voting, we help choose the people who represent us and express our views on questions placed before our communities.
Your Experience Belongs in the Conversation
If you have struggled to find accessible transportation, you understand why transportation policy matters. If you rely on assistance to remain in your home, you know the importance of community services. If you have encountered barriers to employment, housing, or communication, you bring knowledge that public discussions need.
Your experiences give you reasons to ask questions, examine proposals, and consider how candidates’ priorities relate to your own.
You do not have to agree with everyone around you to participate. Your vote is your choice, guided by your judgment and values.
Make a Plan to Participate
Before an election, take time to check your voter registration, learn what will appear on your ballot, and review the voting options available to you. Consider any transportation, communication, or accessibility support you may need. Your county election office can provide current information about deadlines, voting locations, and available assistance.
Making a plan early gives you time to ask questions and address barriers.
Participation Is Part of Independence
At LIFTT, we encourage aging individuals and people with disabilities to participate in community life and speak for themselves. Civic participation is part of that commitment. LIFTT’s encouragement is nonpartisan. We do not endorse or oppose political candidates. We encourage you to become informed, make your own decisions, and exercise your voice.
Voting does not resolve every challenge, but it is a meaningful opportunity to help shape the decisions that affect us all.
Your perspective belongs. Your choices matter. Make a plan to vote.
